So we're back after a long break. Facebook pretty much sucks away all my extra time, but I thought it would be nice to keep the blog going so I won't forget all the fun things about oooju's life right now. Hopefully, blogspot won't be closing down in the next 25 years and I can keep this as a record of Oooju's early years.

Well, Oooju loves Vegas. This summer we went 4 times, i think. Here's a cute video of Oooju riding the escalator at the Flamingo valet. It's a little Chung King Express meets Rain Man.

Like every year, we went down to Palm Desert to spend Thanksgiving with Nate's parents. This is Oooju's 3rd Thanksgiving, but this year was the first time we put him to work. He helped grandma make a vegetable jello. And he helped me baste the turkey. The turkey is usually my responsibility because Nate's mom is a vegetarian and would rather not have to rub a dead turkey all over.

It was a really fun and relaxing break. We went swimming after we put the turkey in the oven. We walked around the lake after dinner. And then, we went to the Living Desert to see the night time holiday Wildlights display. They have amazing model trains that run around what looks like a miniature version of the South west kind of along Route 66. Reminded me of the movie Cars which happens to be Oooju's favorite movie right now. When we passed by the teepee tent motel, I called it the Cozy Cone, and everyone around kind of laughed because they knew what I was talking about. But there really is something mesmerizing about model trains.

Although we spent most of our time watching the trains, we got to see some other light displays. Oh, and we got to take a picture with Santa. Oooju was not ready to sit on Santa's lap by himself. I don't blame him. So I was forced to sit on Santa's short little lap which was too small for my big butt.

Then Friday morning we took a paddle boat out on the lake. Now that Oooju's a little older, we can do so many more things.

Robert and Nuvia's Wedding

Last month we went to Robert and Nuvia's wedding. It was so much fun! Even the little ones had a great time. Oooju and Kennedy got along for the most part, except when Oooju pushed her. It's not that he's trying to be aggressive and violent--he just doesn't know how to express his excitement. It's kind of like when a puppy is so happy to see you, it'll jump on you.

Oooju and I went to visit my friend Sachiko in Newport, Oregon. She just had twin girls! I wanted to help her out because it's a lot of work taking care of twins. But unfortunately, Nate couldn't go because he had to go back to work. But we talked a lot over the phone.

Oooju and I were visiting the farmer's market on a Saturday and here is Oooju taking a call from dada. In Korean baby talk, "gigi" means dirty or a dirty mess. He really liked saying this on our trip. And believe me, there was a lot of "gigi" to point out. Everyone has a freaking dog in Newport and they all go to the farmers market on Saturday. But not a lot people seem to care about picking up the dog poo.

He also started singing one of the songs from the moon festival episode. afterwards, he says "hoho sad" because Hoho starts crying because he can't see the moon on the moon festival day.

Dance Party At Disneyland
Oooju used to have this strange fear of sparkling/shiny tiled floors. It would paralyze him literally and he could not walk on this type of flooring. So when we got to the tomorrow land terrace, he was a bit apprehensive at first about going onto the dance floor. So here, you can see he's getting a little more courage, tapping his toes and testing out the dance floor.

After a couple more tries, he just went for it!

It's been a crazy busy summer. But now, it's over. And I'm a little sad. As for Oooju, his life has been great! He went to the beach several times. Started bowling. Disneyland again. The long beach aquarium. Museums. And then, Oooju and I went to Oregon to visit my friend Sachiko who just had twin girls. Now Oooju's classes have started up again. So hopefully, this fall will be awesome.

I'm gonna start uploading pictures and videos here (Some videos are already on youtube). But it may take a while.

Knott's

Before the school year ended, we got to go to Knott's Berry Farm with Nate's middle school's graduating 8th grade students. It was a lot of fun. We mainly hung out at Camp Snoopy. This is when I realized that Oooju looks a lot like Linus and not Charlie Brown. This picture on the left was taken on the bus ride. We had a lot of fun on this one. Another ride I went on with Oooju was the balloon ride. I asked Nate to take a picture and this was the best he could do. Then afterwards we went on a train ride which was pretty booty--nothing like the train that goes around Disneyland or Casey Jr. BTW, the whole day I couldn't get over how ghetto the place was. Anyways, I wasn't the only one who thought so and the employee working the sky cabin also couldn't help but talk shit to the whole cabin about all the crappy carnival games at Knott's. It's a fairly small park and not much to see or do but one of the things Oooju really liked was the olympic bobsled by the front entrance. We spent maybe half an hour just hanging out around it. He also really liked Lucy's Lunchbox as perverted as that sounds.

We went to Disneyland with Nate and all his students a week ago. Me, my cousin Grace and Oooju helped "chaperone" the kids. This was Oooju's 4th time there, but nothing has changed. He just likes the weirdest things. this time, it was the railing around the flowers. He just liked stepping up and down, hanging off of them and then as he got bolder, trying to climb over them.

However, we got him away for a couple rides. We finally went on the FInding Nemo submarine ride. It was difficult waiting over 30 minutes in line with a cranky baby, but when we got on, it was pretty fun. The "captain" of the sub asked for all the kids' names to thank them at the end of the ride. He loved Oooju's name and made a special rhyming thanks to "first mate deep blue Oooju." Some other girl with a unique name got a special rhyme but all the other kids didn't. Go Oooju!

we went to lacma this past weekend. we were hanging out in front by the lampposts for a while. That's where I took this picture of him. Then,someone wanted to take a picture of oooju but oooju just flipped out. he started screaming and snearing at the poor girl. it was kind of freaky. on the other hand, kenney was happy to pose for her. she smiled and was so sweet. what is happening to our little oooju guy?

Onto more interesting news: I think Oooju's favorite artist is turning out to be Jeff Koons. He loves the ballon dog, the inflatable toys, he even likes the lobster picture with the naked girl. he had fun point out her butt. But his favorite piece this time was jeff koons steel and bourbon train. he was mesmerized. we looked at it for a good 5 minutes. we stood in front, walked around it. I was so sad because oooju just wanted to play with it but the museum lady was right ther watching us. nate commented that it was probably the most expensive train model oooju will ever see. he was not kidding. one sold for $5.5 million. what is wrong with people.

We hosted my cousin Grace's birthday at our house. I made the food and let me tell you, it was goooood. I was so proud of myself. No one thought I could actually cook. On top of the birthday celebration, we had a white elephant gift exchange with crazy rules. In order to steal a gift, you had to frog leap over the person or down a beer in 10 seconds. But all the gifts were pretty booty and I think most of us used the gift receipts to go get something else. This Tuesday, we took my mom to the airport. She went to Korea to help out her sister who has cancer. I love airports and I just absolutely love Korean Airlines airplanes. The sky blue was such a good choice. I want Oooju to be excited about traveling too and so we waited outside the international teriminal for my mom's plane to take off. We saw a couple of other planes take off, but nothing really compares to seeing a sky blue 747 lift off the ground up close. However, Oooju was way more interested in the shuttle buses. I've been singing "The Wheels on the Bus" to him recently and maybe it's had an impact. Now I have to go find an airplane song.

Dorayaki

A week ago, I sent my friend Sachiko some Japanese treats. She lives in Newport, Oregon so it's hard for her to find Japanese stuff. One of the things I sent her was Dorayaki and she reminded me that it is Doraemon's favorite food. While living in Korea (where I met Sachiko), Doraemon was my favorite character. But I never had Dorayaki before. I gave Oooju some and while he was eating it, it struck me that Oooju kind of looks like Doraemon. You can decide for yourself. Anyways, turns out Doraemon has been appointed Cultural Ambassador of Japan. So now, I have a new goal: Together with Doraemon, make the world a cuter place!

Last week, we had a christmas party in Oooju's music class. Cathy and Bea joined us to check out the classes there. We made antlers but Oooju hates putting anything on his head so it was really hard to get a good picture. this is the best we could do.

Sebastian's Birthday Party

We went to Sebastian's birthday party on Sunday. Judy made all these delicious German pastries. Oooju's favorite was this puffy thing and my favorite was the cheese cake. They have a really nice place and they had a beautiful christmas spread. Sebastian said that in Germany, they light a candle each sunday during December leading up to Christmas. In the picture, there are 2 candles lit. Oooju and Kennedy played really well together as long as he got to hold the circle parts of the skip hop mat and Kennedy kept to the connector parts.

Our friend Mike hooked us up with some Clippers tickets. He's the media director over at the Staples center. Somehow, Mike got the camera man to film us during a timeout. It was crazy: I just looked up and saw us on the big screen so I started screaming and pumping my fists and Nate got up and started jumping up and down. We must have been on the screen for a good minute because my voice was sore afterwards. We also got to see the big man--Yao Ming. We were pretty close to the court so I walked down to take a picture of Yao. After I took the first picture, the usher told me I could only take one. But when I saw how crappy it was, I pleaded to get another shot, and he looked like he was about to give in, but then some chick came up and told me to go back to my seat. Anyways, we were there, the clippers won, and we had a crazy fun time.

This election, Oooju got a little political. Well, my whole family did, especially my mom about Prop 8. Somehow, a guy was walking around our neighborhood passing out Yes on Prop 8 signs. She asked him for one to put on our front lawn even though she's not a citizen and can't even vote. So, Nate got a No on Prop 8 sign from one of his students. On Halloween, it confused the hell out of the trick or treaters. But the next morning, both signs were missing. My mom insists that Oooju was Yes on Prop 8. I had to tell her Oooju loves everyone so that means he is No on Prop 8.

Disneyland

While we were waiting in line for the Teacups ride, we saw Howie Mandel and his kid's possee of Brentwood brats cutting in front of everyone. They really don't deserve special treatment. Anyways, this is the best picture Nate could take without looking too consipcuous.

Tailgating

This was the first time for me and Oooju to go to a UCLA football game. I think everyone enjoyed the tailgating much more than the game. The highlight of the day was when Oooju spelled out his own name in the sand.

3 Days of Halloween Fun!

So on Thursday, we had a halloween party and parade in Oooju's music class. Everyone was so cute. They all stared at each other with this look like something was different but they couldn't quite put their finger on it.

For the parade, we passed by the preschool kids. They were really excited to see all the babies in their costumes. Halloween has become really special now that we have Oooju. I guess I never really liked Halloween all that much. I don't like the scary aspect of it. Dressing up could be fun but I'm too lazy to get creative and dress up myself. And I never got why some chicks think Halloween's about dressing up as slutty as you can. And I really don't need an excuse to drink and party. So I never thought that Halloween could be so fun and so cute! Having kids really makes you appreciate so many things in a new way.

On Halloween, we went trick-o-treating around our neighborhood. Oooju's pretty popular around here. Everyone was excited to see him in his costume. He only cried once at this kid in a freaky bloody clown mask. I nearly cried myself. But here we are at the beginning of the evening. We only went around to less than 10 houses. But the most exciting part was hanging out on our front porch and passing out candy. Oooju had such a great time.

On Saturday, we went to Disneyland with Nate's parents. It was so fun! We didn't go on too many rides, but he braved the "It's hard to be a Bug" show and the Haunted Mansion. We went on the Tea Cups where we saw Howie Mandel. We also took the raft over to Tom Sawyer's Island. And we went on the Buzz Lightyear ride. After he got the hang of walking, Oooju went back to babbling like crazy. I wish some child development specialist or psychic could figure out what he's saying. The other day, he was trying to open a door but couldn't and it sounded like he was cursing. It was in his tone, his hand motions, everything. But, we'll have to wait till he can actually start talking to see what he's got to say. The first video is of him talking on this toy phone. He has a hard time getting the phone to his ears, so sometimes, he'll put it on his eye. The second video is of him talking with my cousin Jisook's soon Tommy. They got along so well and really understood eachother.

Korea is full of trends. Things come and go so quickly, it's hard to keep up. Our friend Nicky says a new dance trend is Tecktonik. It's from France. Nicky described it as some crazy arm dance. She demonstrated and she looked like a crazy chicken. But I found these videos on YouTube. The first is a news story that describes how the dance has become a new trend in KOrea and how people meet online to arrange meetings in real life to learn and practice the dance together. The second clip is of this guy who does the dance in random places like the subway, a busy shopping area, costco and here, in a lecture hall.

Here is the last video of Oooju before walking became his main mode of moving around. We're still in Incheon at Jihyun's apartment. It's probably about 5am. We all kind of woke up around 4:30am and went outside so we wouldn't disturb Jihyun and her family. Being the animal lover/terrorizer he is, Oooju kept trying to catch these pigeons for about 30 minutes.

So after 3 days in Incheon, we finally made it into Seoul. We stayed at my cousin Junoh's house. He lives in Samsong dong which is a really nice area of Seoul, two stops from Kangnam and COEX mall. We pretty much had the whole apartment to ourselves because Junoh, his wife Miyoung and daughter Ji-ine are all staying at his mother-in-law's house. Anyways, it was raining the first full day in the city so we decided to spend the day at COEX mall. we were there from 9am to 4pm. But it was here that Oooju finally really started walking.

*Hi Seoul is the new city motto. The full thing is Hi! Seoul: Soul of Asia. Korea Sparkling is the new motto for the whole country thought up by the Korean Tourism Organization. It used to be Dynamic Korea, but now, Busan's using Dynamic for it's city motto.

So we just got back from our 3 week trip to Korea. While it was really tough traveling with a one year old, it was so much fun. I already miss it and I'm already looking forward to our next trip back. Anyways, so much happened, I just wanted to start with the end. The plane ride back was quite eventful. We ran into our friend David Chow on the plane. How crazy is that. He was coming back from a 3 month trip around China and central Asia including several of the former Soviet "stan" countries (i.e. Uzbekistan). Then, a kid sitting nearby started hurling like crazy. It really didn't sound good at all. After him, the guy sitting in front of him started rolling around on the ground. I guess he barfed already in the toilet (my cousin grace said in one of the lavatories, there was some barf on the toilet seat and we're guessing it was his) and he was still in some serious pain. the flight attendant had to make an announcement asking if a doctor was on board. I never thought I would ever really hear that on a flight. Then, I started feeling sick too and had to barf in the bathroom. Gross. I think something was up with the award winning KAL bibimbap. Nate wasn't feeling good either.

In Transit
Because I used my miles to get a free ticket, we had to make a stop in Tokyo. But fortunately, we got a bassinet seat which made the plane ride so much easier. And lucky for us, Oooju just barely made the height and weight limit (because he had grown over the 3 weeke, on the flight back, it was so obvious he was just way too big for the bassinet. I had to lie to the flight attendent to get one anyways.) Here you can see him taking a nice little nap. The Japanese couple sitting next to us had a 10 month old son. They also took pictures of their baby sleeping in the bassinet. It's just too cute. But people seem to be looking out for travelers with babies. We got to board the plane first. And then at Narita airport, we found this awesome kid's playroom. Oooju went crazy with excitement. Below are some more pics of Oooju on the plane. The one with the beer is neat because the open sign from the airplane door lines up perfectly with the beer.

Welcome to Incheon
We stayed with our friend Jihyun who lives in Incheon for the first 3 days. She's so funny and crazy. We always refer to her as the Incheon girl and our friend Nicky as the Dark girl. We met them both in Irvine when they were studying English at UCI. Together, they are the funniest people ever. It was great to meet Jihyun's family. She really took good care of us and especially Oooju (until she almost killed him walking down some stairs with him on our last day in Korea). She even taught him this great song:

So above is a picture of Incheon Girl and Dark Girl. Then there's Jihyun's grandmother and Oooju. She was so cool. She had this husky voice from years of smoking and kept saying to Oooju "Uh-boo-bah" which is what little kids say when they want a piggy back ride. Then, there's the sign for Chicky Pub the best chicken hof in the world. Because our friend lives in a family friendly suburb, most of the customers at this place were families and a lot of women. There would be a table of moms drinking beer and having a great time and then next to them, a table with all their kids. So it wasn't weird that I was there standing with a baby strapped to my back drinking beer. You gotta love Korea. Anyways, throughout our whole trip, Jihyun kept repeatng their motto: Your appetite will be stimulated by unique flavor of the Chicky Pub. Then there's me getting the Doctor Fish treatment at some cafe. For 2 dollars, you get to dunk your feet for 15 minutres into these little pools while Doctor Fish come and eat off all your dead skin. Turns out, they're not even real doctor fish which are native to Turkey or some other middle eastern country. I guess this country refuses to export them. Instead, the places in Korea get these fish from China. It's a scam and some friends told me that one lady had to go to the hospital becuase of an infection she got from doing this. Anyways, of the 15 minutes I paid for, I could only withstand about 40 seconds, five seconds at a time. It felt like a million little fingers tickling my feet. I couldn't stop laughing.

Welcome to Wolmido
Our friend Jihyun insisted we go to the "world renowned" Wolmido which is a little island off of Incheon. She really wanted us to ride the "Disco" which is some cheap carnival ride she insists is world famous as well. She says people come as far as Busan to ride this Disco thing. So we took a 45 minute bus ride to Wolmido. When we got there, it just felt like a deserted beach town closed down for the off season. But we purchased our tickets to ride the disco and sure enough, other people were showing up to ride it as well. Most notable was a group of high school girls in their uniforms, supposedly out of school on a field trip. Anyways, it's a crazy ride, really painful and mainly about hurling people out of their seats. Well, after everyone got off the ride which lasted about 3 minutes, Jihyun looks at us and says, ok, that's it, let's go home. Even though she said there's nothing else to see, we walk around to realize on our own that there really is nothing else to see in the world famous Wolmido. Later on, Nate kept asking everyone if they had been to Wolmido and how it's more beautiful than the Grand Canyon.

Roseola

So Oooju's big sickness this year was Roseola or baby measles. We had no idea what it was. It starts as a fever and here, you can see how miserable poor Buckyball is. His fever went up to 104 and lasted 4 days.

Once the fever breaks, the virus is expelled from the body through a rash. However, we never took a picture of this. Fortunately, I found this picture while doing research. It might as well be Oooju. We fooled my mom. She was so confused as to how his picture ended up on some medical website.

So my aunt in Korea sent us a cute little hanboke(traditional korean clothes) for Oooju's dol (one year birthday). We went to Sears to take these pictures. Oooju is not a smiley baby. I tried to explain that to the lady, but she kept fanning something in his face to get him to smile. He just kept staring at her.

Back Again

After a grueling quarter, I finally have some time to blog again. Oooju's almost a year old. Two more days. We'll have a big party for him on Saturday and I'll definitely post pictures from the party, but here are some videos that were taken recently. I can't believe how big he's gotten.

Last weekend, we took the baby to BCAM at LACMA. Unfortunately, we couldn't take too many pictures. Actually, they wouldn't let us take any pictures. That's too bad because I really wanted to get one of Oooju in front of Koons's blue balloon dog.

However, I got a video of Oooju crawling inside one the the Richard Sera works.

We thought we could take a picture in front of the fire truck outside but right here, the security guard is trying to stop us from taking a picture.

But besides the problems with the pictures, we had a great time. Oooju loved the art work. I think contemporary art appeals to babies because everything looks so cartoonish. The baby responds really well to the bright colors and big prints.

Easter Bunny

So here's what happened with the easter bunny pictures. When we got there, it never occured to me that Oooju would cry because of the bunny. But a bunch of kids were crying and I don't blame them. Hazel knew all about babies crying because of Lucas's past experience with Santa, so she sat in on the picture and that calmed Lucas down. But even with me sitting with Oooju, he kept staring at the freaky retarded easter bunny and kept crying. I just kept thinking that it took so much time to get ready and get to the damn mall so I didn't want to waste this opportunity and I was going to get a good picture. So I told the easter bunny to get out of the picture. It worked out really well. Except Oooju looks kind of pissed off at this point.

The Park

As crazy as this may sound, today was the first time we took Oooju to the park. He's now almost 9months old. Sad. I know. But at least we finally made it. Anyways, he loved it. It's a park next to my parents' house. I was always afraid of going there because in high school, I had heard that the oil refineries near by dumped in the lake and it was toxic. But it's actually very beautiful. We all had such a great time. It felt so good to be out in a green space with water. Oooju and I went on the swings and the slides together. He especially loved the swing. But here he is doing what he does best--eating. Although this time, it's grass.

Oooju loves this guitar and it's proven to be very versatile. He'll pluck at the strings, push it around like a tonka truck, sit on it, use it as a foot rest, a teether, a walker. I'm sure there are other uses we just haven't seen.

The other day, Nate and I had to stop by the market on our way home from school and I realized how lately, all we ever buy at the store is beer and formula. So I've decided to change the name of the blog to reflect our new lives as parents who like to let loose once in a while.

Playdates

so we had a couple of playdates which makes me so happy because I want Oooju to go out and explore.

Last Sunday, we got to meet Cole, Erica's new baby. Erica was a teacher at Nate's school and we became close bonding over our ups and downs of trying to conceive and our ambivilance about embracing motherhood.

Then later that day, we went to the Petros. Vanessa and Justin are probably the sweetest kids. They love Oooju so much and they're so nice to him. He really liked hanging out with them. We also got to play rock band which is awesome, way better than guitar hero. I just hate games where you have to wait and watch one person play at a time. But it's really hard playing with a baby on your arm. I should have gotten extra points or something.

Monday, we visited Jenny and Margot. Oooju was very interested in her socks. Jenny's mom showed me a picture of Jenny when she was 100days old and she looked just like Margot. But I think we decided that Margot had Martin's ears.

Then Friday, the Hongs came over and Oooju got to play with Yuna. She's a neat kid. She says all sorts of funny things. At one point, Oooju was crawling in front of her and she pointed to his butt and said in Korean: "eh-ki kundi" (baby butt). But towards the end of the night, I guess she was tired or something and she went crazy. Out of nowhere, she turned the bouncer over the way some drunk guy would turn a table over in a bar. And then she turned the airplane rider over and just bit into the wheel. After that, she just started balling. I guess she couldn't find the right words to express I'm tired. but we definitely all got the message.

Suyeon says that Dan taught Yuna all his dance moves. I really like the shoulder thing she does at the end. Very gangsta.

Playdates are great. watching little babies trying to interact is always fun.

San Francisco

So saturday after our garage sale, Nate and I went to San Francisco sans baby to visit our friend Roberto. He's there on a one year fellowship for some california public policy institute. Anyways, we were going to be there for only 28 hours so we packed in as much stuff as possible. It was so fun. It was great seeing Roberto again just hanging out drinking and talking like the good old days back in Verano.

So we hung out on Hayes by the Symphony Hall and Roberto actually tried some absinthe. It tasted like Ouzo. Who would have guessed. Well, according to Roberto, that shit's pretty potent. It had him seeing double for a while which sucks because afterwards, we went to the symphony and I'm not sure he was really into it. We ran into our friend Gary's gay buddies at the symphony. It was a really great program. Ligiti and Bartok. We left during intermission so we didnt' here Shostakovich.

Later, we went to the Castro and munched on some pizza before drinking more at the Mix bar. As we were heading for the cable car stop, we passed by Twin Peaks and inside, there was Amy Tan (or so I thought). I got Nate to scream into the bar "AMY" to see if she would respond, but instead, everyone else screamed back. We met some cool kids from Pusan, South Korea waiting for the cable car to arrive.

We were staying a some crappy hotel The Monarch. Don't ever stay there. Its in the tenderloin. I really diddn't have a good stay there. At 3 in the morning, I woke up because of loud noises. I could hear a bed squeeking and some woman sceeming "Do That" and some guy moaning like he was retarded. Anyways, I couldn't go back to sleep so I kept peeping out the door because I thought the cops had come, but it turns out the woman was a hooker and as she was leaving the guy's room, I could hear him say to her "thanks, I'll never forget you." On top of that, there were bed bugs and Nate got some bites on his leg.

Anyways, when I woke up in the morning for coffee I saw people still coming in and out of the Element Lounge across the street. So I woke up Nate and we decided to check it out at 8:30 in the morning. I thought they were still open from the night before. But it turned out to be an after hours lounge from 6am-2pm. Both Nate and I were so happy we found this place. How come we've never been to an after hours party. I guess we had it all wrong. It's really not a place you want to go after partying all night long. It's really a great place for people who wake up early and want to party. Everyone looked well rested except this one dirty bitch who looked so tore up. But, we just drank and danced all morning till about 12. It was so much fun. It was someone's birthday and they even gave us some cake.

Earlier in the week, I was watching the Battle for Algiers and there's a scene in the film where a group of young people are drinking and dancing in a bar in the middle of the day, before they all get blasted. Anyways, it had me thinking how come there's no place to go in the afternoon to drink and dance and just have a relaxing good time. I can't believe I actually found a place. Nate and I are always wondering why people feel like they can't party till 10:30 at night. And as parents, this may be the best way to go out and get that party/club vibe. It's probably a lot easier to get someone to babysit from 9am to 2pm rather than 9pm to 2am.

Anyways, an even better way is to bring your baby along. I guess that's the idea behind Baby Disco. I hope to go to next month's party.

Super Tuesday: Hillary or Celery?

My mom of all people actually started a political discussion at dinner the other night. She was curious who we were going to vote for in the primaries today. So we told her we were voting for Obama. She didn't like it. She said if she could vote, she would vote for McCain (thank god she's not a citizen). So I told her my dad who is a citizen is voting for Hillary. She got angry wondering why does Hillary want to be president when her husband was already president for 8 years. She thought Hillary should be happy with that. Obviously, my mom is pretty politically and socially conservative. Anyways, when my dad came to the dinner table, my mom said to him: "So you're gonna vote for Hillary." My dad's response: "What do you want--Celery?" I laughed so hard as that short exchange between my mom and dad explained so much about my life and their life as immigrants in America.

After the laughter died down, we asked my dad, why hillary and not obama. And to that he actually had an answer. He explained that if we vote for Obama and he wins, someone will assinate him. And to protect his life, my dad's decided to vote for Hillary. He gave historical examples of Kennedy and MLK and said that their untimely deaths were a direct result of racial politics in America. I was impressed. He even went on to say that there are still people in America who would kill someone because of their race. I secretly wondered: are you one of them dad? But no matter which way you look at it, he's not voting for Obama because he's black.

But I hope Obama wins not because he's black, but because I don't think anywhere in this world (I'm only guessing here because I haven't really done a fact check yet), an ethnic minority has ever won legitimately a position of such high power. It would be nice for America to be the first. Obviously, it's already too late for us to be the first to elect a women president. Oh and the most important reason, I agree with Obama's politics.

Super Bowl Sunday

So, Roger had a "SuperBowlJumpOffPotLuck" at his "bachelor pad" in the valley. I haven't been in an apartment like that in year. It had typical bachelor pad decor:

Jane: won $75 from our pool (it's always the girl who don't know anything about football that wins)
Roger: won $25 (If the Giants hadn't scored their last touchdown, he would have won $200. Sorry dude).
Tubba: won $100 from his work pool (this will help pay for our SF trip)
Me: I won $5 for the Giants to win against Swain's Patriots and 10 "Karen is my master" jumping jacks from Randell
Swain: $10 for rock, paper, scissors (from me and Grace) but then lost to Nate

As for the rest of you that didn't win shit, all I have to say is: you guys should have never jumped on the Patriots bandwagon. Booty-Hooty!

Anyways, the SBJOPL was a hit. Can't wait for next year's.

Oooju Eats Korean Snack For the First Time!

...And he loves it! Since I'm already up late posting, I decided to include another first video clip. Here, he's eating what Koreans call BBung tee-kee. It's really good. I think Oooju looks very Korean to me in this video clip. Maybe it's because he's eating a Korean snack. According to one of Nate's students, Oooju looks like a white baby, but cries like a Korean baby.

I guess a lot has been happening in Oooju's life lately. He's eating more solids everyday. He loves sweet potatoes, pears, bananas, and apples. He's not too fond of apricots and other mixed fruit combos. He definitely hates carrots, green peas and avocados. I also gave him a little fish the other day. I'm not sure if he liked it or not.

Oooju can finally crawl

We thought that Oooju would definitely crawl during the time my sister and Aaron were visiting. He showed so many signs. At first he finally got into position. Then he would get on all fours and rock back and forth. For a while, he would just stick his butt in the air. Then he would do some type of break dancing move. Then, he would take a step or two and then retreat. So last Friday, I tried to encourage Oooju to crawl with some food because we all know the boy loves to eat. But, as you can see in the video below, it didn't quite work.

However, today, I decided to get on all fours and demonstrate to Oooju how to crawl. So I crawled up to Oooju, then around him, and I nudged him and called for him to follow me. I felt like a mommy tiger encouraging her cub to test out those little baby legs. But, he just stared at me, with that same confused look he usually has. And that was that.

And so while I was waiting for Nate to come home, I decided to drink some peach lambic. I let Oooju touch the cold bottle and then after I opened it, I set it down a couple feet away from him while I threw away the cork and foil. When I turned back around, he was crawling straight for the bottle. I couldn't believe my eyes. It's just so funny that Oooju would first crawl towards a bottle of beer. He's definitely our son. So here's Oooju crawling for the second time in his life. He kind of gets tired out in the middle of the video clip and his pjs make it difficult for him to crawl so he gives up during the second half. I still haven't figured out how to edit these video clips.

Grandma's Gone to Korea

Well, the day we got back from Vegas, my mom went off to Korea. My cousin Sooin is getting married to some guy named Stanley. I guess his nickname is Shrek, and my other cousin jokes that they look like Shrek and Princess Fiona. Anyways, she paid for my mom's ticket so she can make it to the wedding which is nice since my parents have given so much to her and her other siblings.

So, with my mom gone, it's been kind of lonely around the house. My sister's here visting from Houston and Aaron's visiting from Maryland (I'll write more about their visits later on) but it's still not the same without her. Usually, every morning when I bring Oooju down so we can sleep a bit longer, she sings him this Jesus song except it's in korean and goes something like this: yesu neem, yesu neem, OOOJU jik-kiyu joo sae yo... Jesus, Jesus, please look after OOOJU. Ever since the baby was born, my mom adds Oooju's name to every song. It took her a while to work it out and in the beginning, she would sometimes slip up and say the original lyrics. But now, there's no more singing.

My dad's really missing her, as she's become like his only friend. For a while his old buddy "Magic Man" was coming around to fix a door in our room, but he's really flakey because he get's drunk and can't wake up in the morning to make it out over here. When we were really litte, Magic Man would come around and do magic tricks for us. Since then, we've only known him as "Magic Man."

With her gone, I realize I have very little pictures of her on the blog. Which is a shame as she's the one that takes care of Oooju most of the day. So here's a picture I found of the two of them. It must be a couple days before his baptism.

Jane, Nate and I flew into Vegas. While we were waiting for the rest of the gorup to arrive by car, Nate and I celebrated our return to Vegas with a big ass beer at the Brew Pub in the Monte Carlo. Jane sipped on her whiskey.

Dude, why are the Wii consoles so hard to find. I've been on a crazy hunt for one and I guess I'm not the only one. There are a bunch of moms and dads out there lurking around Gamestops for the UPS guy to show up with the day's shipment hoping to God that there are some Wiis in the shipment.

After calling around and waiting at two stores, unfortunately, I did not get a Wii. On the bright side, I did learn some interesting stuff. Like Nitendo's been a company since 1889. The guy at Gamestop said they started off making majong tiles, but he was wrong. What a weinerdog. Anyways, according to wikipedia, they started off making go-stop cards. They also ran a love motel and a taxi company before settling on video games.

I also learned that moms and dads know more about video games than I had thought. However, their knowledge is a bit superficial and you don't know how many times I heard some middle-aged woman walk into gamestop and ask if they had "that guitar thing."

Then, I learned that Target has a bunch of Wiis in their warehouse waiting for Sunday when they put out their ads. What a bunch of losers. So this Sunday, at the big major retailers like Target, Walmart, Bestbuy, they're going to be put out, because that's when Gamestop won't be getting any shipments at all. This is all according to the guy at Gamestop who thinks the world revolves around them. Also, at bestbuy, I guess you get a ticket. But I heard at Target, it's a free for all with people running through the store to get to the electronics department. I may have to do some reconnaissance work before this Sunday.

Anyways, I'll be back at Gamestop tomorrow. Wish Mii luck. Hopefully, I'll have one by Saturday for the game portion of my party, otherwise, you know where I'll be on Sunday morning.

Lucky Magic Slippers

About a week ago, me, my mom, and oooju went to Korea Town and stopped off at Kim's Home Center. I bought these slippers and actually ended up on KBS LA news checking them out during Kim's Home Center's grand reopening. The camera guy really liked the way I shopped so he kept asking me to pick up the slippers over and over again.

Anyways, when we got home, the slippers proved to be not only lucky but magical. For some reason, the baby really gets a kick out of them.

Blogging

I don't know if it's me or what but keeping up this blog is a lot of work. I need to learn some shortcuts or something because it's kind of exhausting to me. Maybe I'm just retarded or something, but I need some tips. I have so many pictures I want to post with little cute stories to go with them. But they'll have to wait.

You know, I'm supposed to be writing my dissertation proposal right now, but here I am wasting time again. Btw, I'm defending my proposal on Dec 14. So I'm a little stressed out lately. But after the 14th, I think I'll be a different person.

Oooju's Not Going to Hell!

On Sunday, Oooju got baptized. He's been saved! Yay! Anyways, it was my mom's idea and it was just way more important for her to have him baptized. Days leading up to the baptism, she would get teary eyed just thinking about it. She has this plan to get Oooju to go to church with her and then eventually, the two of them will team up together to evangelize the rest of the family. According to my mom, Nate, my sister, my dad and I are all going to hell. The sad thing is, it really breaks her heart thinking we won't be joining her in heaven.

So my cousins Jane and Grace also came to the baptism. However, I don't know what type of church they're used to going to because they showed up dressed like a bunch of hookers. Jane was wearing some lacy thing that looked more like a nighty and Grace had on skin tight pants, a midriff bearing tank top and some crazy heeled boots. Unfortunately you can't see the boots in the picture, but believe me, they did not look like they were going to a baptism. But they're great aunts to Oooju and I guess that's what matters.

Duff's First Thanksgiving!

We went to Nate's mom's house for Thanksgiving which has become a tradition for us. But this year, Duff got to join the party on the outside (last year, I was almost two months pregnant with him). It was also a very special day because it was Duff's first time swimming in a pool. He loved it as you can see from the pictures:

Here's Nate and Duff with the turkey. It came out great! Since Nate's mom is a vegetarian, I have to prepare the turkey. My secret is I massage it with salt and pepper and baste the turkey with a lot of love and tenderness.

Here's Duff with his Grandma and Great Grandma. Great Grandma's pretty old school and says some funny shit. Like on Thanksgiving morning, she came out into the living room and said: "I look like the socks on a rooster!" We don't really know exactly what it means or where the expression comes from, but it was funny as hell when she said it.

Ghetto-Ass Carnival Behind My House

So the past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we went to this ghetto-ass carnival behind my house. It was great. I used to go when I was in junior high school. I can't really say I have fond memories of it, but a have a couple memorable ones. Like one time, this carnie in charge of the viking ride offered me and my girlfriends some chewing tobacco and then after he started the ride, he went off somewhere and left us on the ride for over 10 minutes.

So Nate won the Curious George doll by throwing a plastic ring on a coke bottle. It was great. I was so proud of him. Sunday, our little family (me, tubba, and duff) went to Brentwood to see a free concert at Dutton's Bookstore. Violinist David Juritz has been on a world tour completely funded by the money he makes on the streets playing his violin to support his charity Musequality.

There, we saw Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm and Susanna Hoffs from the Bangles. Btw, Larry David drives a pale blue Prius. I think that's the way Hollywood people try to be environmental.

Oooju's the Gerber Baby!

A couple of old ladies were looking at Oooju and commented that he looked like the Gerber baby. I think the Gerber baby is adorable so it made me really happy. However, I have to admit that most of the time, Oooju does not look like the Gerber baby (just check out the pictures in the other posts). But here, I think he does. Way to go Oooju!

Superman!

Oooju does this new thing where he raises one arm straight up. I don't get it but I think it's totally funny. He usually does it while sitting in his favorite bouncy chair and while getting his diaper changed. I think he's caught on that I notice when he does that so he'll stop doing it right when I see him do it (he's a punkass). So it's been really hard to capture it on camera. But here are some shots I got.

Oooju is 3 months old today. Now that he's a big boy, he can do a lot more. Like yesterday, he could sit by himself on the couch. Yay!

And here he's doing his favorite thing: kicking back with a Coors Light. He's definitely our son.
